List of High Cholesterol Foods

While cholesterol is important for normal functioning of the body, it may cause dangerous health problems (such as heart diseases) when it’s level in the blood rises above ‘normal’ levels. Here is a list of high cholesterol foods, followed by some simple ways to lower your cholesterol levels.
List of High Cholesterol Foods
  • Fatty meats. These include beef, veal, pork, lamb, duck, fish (especially fish oil), crabs, chicken and turkey.
  • Dairy products that are full fat.
  • Processed meats. Sausages, salami and meat pies (an Australian favorite) are three examples.
  • Chips and other snack foods (especially anything that is fried).
  • Take-out (or take-away) foods are usually high in cholesterol, especially if they have been deep fried.
  • Cakes and pastries.
  • Eggs
Ways to Reduce Cholesterol Levels
  • Eat less of the above foods!
  • Only eat lean meat (such as cooked lean chicken). Avoid any processed meat.
  • Choose low or reduced fat dairy products.
  • Choose polyunsaturated margarine over butter.
  • Limit your intake of cheese and ice cream. Two serving a week is enough.
  • Avoid binge drinking. Limit your alcohol consumption to 1-2 drinks a day.
  • Exercise regularly (for at least thirty minutes, three to four times a week).
  • Lose some weight (see our post ‘how to lose weight in one week‘).
  • Quit smoking.
  • Increase the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables in your diet.
  • Eat foods that are high in fiber (see our list of high fiber foods)
  • You do not have to cut eggs and seafood out of your diet completely, but just limit your intake.
  • Eat more garlic and onions.
