Snakes are reptiles that are distinguished from lizards by their lack of eyelids and external ears. But where do snakes live? This post will answer that question and also look at some interesting facts about snakes.
Where Do Snakes Live?
Snakes live in every continent in the world except for Antarctica. So they live in Europe, Asia, Australia, North America, South America and Africa. Strangely, they are not found in New Zealand, Ireland or Iceland. King cobras live in forests. Other snakes live amongst the rocks, in rivers (sea snakes), in caves, in holes and in grassland. A few species of desert snakes live under the sand. So now you know that answer to the question ‘where do snakes live’. Now, let’s look at some facts about snakes.

  • There are over 2,900 species of snakes.
  • Most species are non-venomous.
  • Most pet snakes only need to be fed every 5-14 days.
  • Cooked rattlesnake is eaten in the Midwestern United States.
  • Most species of snakes lay eggs.
  • Snakes are carnivorous (eat only meat). They feed on lizards, birds, eggs, fish, insects, snails and other snakes.
  • Snakes use their good sense of smell to track their prey.
  • Australia has the largest number of venomous snakes in the world.
