How Long Do Butterflies Live

Some time ago I wrote the post ‘where do butterflies live‘. Today I will answer the question ‘how long do butterflies live’ and also look at a some interesting facts about butterflies.
How Long Do Butterflies Live
An ‘old wives tale’ about butterflies is that they live for only a few hours to a day. However, butterflies live for between a week to a year, depending on the species of butterfly. So now you know how long butterflies live (from a week to a year- depending on the species).
Facts About Butterflies
  • Butterfly eggs remain dormant during the winter so the butterfly will survive the winter.
  • Butterflies have scale-covered wings. That is what give butterflies their color.
  • Nectar from flowers are a butterflies main diet.
  • Some butterflies migrate over large distances. The Monarch butterfly migrates from Mexico to North America, a distance of 2,500 to 3,000 miles (4,000 to 4,800 km).
  • Egyptian hieroglyphs (from 3,500 years ago) feature pictures of butterflies.
  • Some people say they have ‘butterflies in their stomach’ when they are nervous.
  • Some people say it is good luck when a butterfly lands on you. Butterflies are attracted to sodium in salt. Human sweat is salty. That is why butterflies sometimes land on people.
  • Butterfly eggs stick to leaves with a special ‘glue’ that hardens extremely quickly.
  • Butterflies use their antennae to sense the air for nectar.

Where do Butterflies Live

Butterflies are amazing animals that are adored by millions of people worldwide. Butterfly watching is a popular hobby for many people. Butterflies are important ecologically as they are one of the major sources of pollination. This article will answer the question where do butterflies live by analyzing what countries and climates butterflies live in and looking at where butterflies live at different stages of their life cycles.
What Countries and Climates Do Butterflies Live In?
Butterflies are found in nearly every single country in the world. Butterflies can be found in the United States, Canada, all across Europe, Australia and throughout Asia. Different species of butterflies will live in cold, hot, dry and humid conditions. The only places butterflies are not found are in extremely cold places (such as Antarctica) and very arid deserts. There are an estimated 18,000 different species of butterflies worldwide. So now you what countries butterflies live in, but that doesn’t fully answer the question where do butterflies live. Do butterflies live in trees, on plants or do they dig holes in the ground? To answer that, we will look at where butterflies live at different stages of their life cycle.
Eggs
Butterflies generally lay their eggs near winter on plants. So butterflies live on plants for the first stage of their life cycle.
Caterpillar
Like the butterfly eggs, caterpillars spend nearly all their time on plants. Nearly all caterpillars are herbivores and eat plant leaves exclusively, but some species of caterpillars eat insects that are found on the plants. Caterpillars are basically just eating machines that spend nearly all their time on plants eating plant leaves (and occasionally insects).
Butterfly
One of the most amazing transformations in nature is the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. But where does the butterfly live in this stage of its life cycle? Well, butterflies live a lot of their lives flying around in the air looking for food and pollinating flowers. Butterflies primarily live around flowers as they eat their nectar. Butterflies will also live on plants, to eat the plant sap, or near rotting fruits.
